Correction of Written Parliamentary Question

Statement made on 3 April 2025

Statement UIN HLWS574

Statement

It has been brought to my attention by officials that a written answer which I gave to Baroness Redfern contained misleading information about registration applications to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

In my reply to written Parliamentary Question HL4991, tabled by Baroness Redfern on 12 February 2025, I stated that “the CQC is undertaking rapid changes to increase the number of assessments, provide updated ratings, and speed up its registration process for timely onboarding of new providers, with 25,230 completed since April 2024.” Unfortunately, the 25,230 figure relates to all activity regarding registration, not just the registration of new providers and so this statement was misleading. I should have been clear that this figure includes registering new providers, making changes to existing provider conditions, and updating registered manager or nominated individual’s details.

I would like to apologise on behalf of the department and CQC for this error. The department takes its responsibility for parliamentary accountability very seriously and steps have been put in place to ensure the accuracy of information provided relating to the CQC so such errors do not happen again.
