To ask the Secretary of State for Education, how many institutions in England are under investigatigation by her Department on the suspicion that they may be operating as unregistered independent schools.

It is a criminal offence under Section 96 of the Education and Skills Act 2008 to conduct an unregistered independent school. The Department and Ofsted continue to investigate institutions believed to be operating illegally.
There are currently 10 institutions under investigation on suspicion of operating an unregistered independent school.
