Care Workers: Conditions of Employment and Pay

Question for Department of Health and Social Care

UIN 139429, tabled on 14 March 2022

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he has taken to help ensure parity of pay and conditions for social care staff to comparable roles in the NHS as part of the Government’s planned reforms to social care.

Unlike those employed by the National Health Service, the vast majority of care workers are employed by private sector providers who set their pay and conditions, independent of central Government. It is the responsibility of local authorities to work with care providers to determine a fair rate of pay based on local market conditions.

The recent white paper ‘People at the Heart of Care’ is supported by an investment of at least £500 million over three years to build a well-trained, supported, sustainable and recognised workforce.
