Question for Ministry of Justice

UIN 129143, tabled on 24 February 2022

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many custodial sentences of six months or less have been handed down by courts in England and Wales in each of the last five years.

Answered on

1 March 2022

The Ministry of Justice has published information on sentencing outcomes in England and Wales up to December 2020, available in the ‘Outcomes by Offence’ data tool, which can be found here: Criminal justice statistics quarterly - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

In the data tool, the number of defendants, by year, who received a custodial sentence of 6 months or less can be found on rows 55 – 59.

Named day
Named day questions only occur in the House of Commons. The MP tabling the question specifies the date on which they should receive an answer. MPs may not table more than five named day questions on a single day.
