Armenia: Azerbaijan

Question for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

UIN HL6235, tabled on 21 February 2022

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they plan formally to mark the anniversaries of the killing of Armenians in the Azerbaijani towns of (1) Sumgait in February 1988, (2) Ganja (then-Kirovabad) in November 1988, and (3) Baku in January 1990.

These were tragic episodes in the history of this region and all of its peoples. Atrocities of this kind, and others which occurred, must never take place again. The UK Government utterly condemns the targeting of civilians (which is in breach of International Humanitarian Law) and continues to make every effort to support lasting peace and stability throughout the region. We have not made plans to mark these specific anniversaries.
