All carers in England are entitled to a carer’s assessment. All local authorities, including the London Borough of Havering, are required to undertake a carer’s assessment for any carer who appears to have a need for support. If a carer is assessed as having needs that are eligible for support, local authorities have a legal duty to meet these needs on request from the carer.

Carers may be entitled to is Carer’s Allowance, which provides support for people unable to work full-time because of their caring responsibilities. The weekly rate of Carer’s Allowance will increase to £69.70 from April 2022. Since 2010, the Allowance has increased from £53.90 to £69.70 a week, providing an additional £800 a year for carers.
