Armenia: Genocide

Question for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office

UIN HL4071, tabled on 16 November 2021

To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have to join the governments of the United States of America, Germany, France and Canada in formally recognising the Armenian Genocide of 1915–23.

The events of 1915-1916 were a tragic episode in the history of the Armenian people and they must never be forgotten. The UK Government of the day condemned the massacres and this Government fully endorses that view. It is the long-standing policy of the British Government that any judgement as to whether genocide has occurred is a matter for a competent national or international court, rather than for governments or non-judicial bodies.
