Further electrification of the rail network will play an important role in achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Department’s forthcoming Transport Decarbonisation Plan will set out the necessary scale and pace of rail decarbonisation between now and 2050, informed by the Network Rail-led Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy.
Electrification schemes will be developed through the Rail Network Enhancements Pipeline (RNEP). We intend to publish a RNEP Update, and will do so as soon as possible.
