NHS Digital has put together a programme of work to establish an information system to collect surgical implants and devices data from all National Health Service and private provider organisations starting with mesh-related procedures.

It is currently in the pilot stage and once completed will be followed by establishing a Medical Device Information System (MDIS). MDIS will be used to support surveillance of all medical devices including mesh-related procedures and will enable patients to be identified and contacted where safety concerns are identified. NHS Digital hopes to move to full rollout in January 2021.
