Breast Milk: Donors

Question for Department of Health and Social Care

The Government is committed to supporting breastfeeding and human milk banking, as the health benefits are clear for mothers and their babies.

There are currently no plans to change the way in which milk banks are funded, which is via a combination of National Health Service funding and public donations.

However, in relation to meeting the ongoing demand for donor milk during the COVID-19 outbreak, local initiatives remain underway to maximise provision, for example, milk banks in Glasgow and Oxford piloting the use of a novel traffic light system so that the babies at most need are prioritised when milk stocks run low.
