Refugees: Climate Change

Question for Home Office

UIN 28007, tabled on 11 March 2020

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the potential increase in refugees as a result of loss of land due to rising sea levels.

Answered on

Climate change is not recognised under the 1951 Refugee Convention and, therefore, cannot be used as a justification for requesting or granting international protection.

Climate change is a reality that requires greater and more coordinated adaptation and mitigation planning.
