China: Muslims

Question for Foreign and Commonwealth Office

UIN 19886, tabled on 24 February 2020

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what assessment he has made of the effect of use of Hikvision’s high-technology surveillance on the human rights of (a) Uighurs and (b) other Muslim minorities in China.

We are aware of reports linking Hikvision to the human rights situation in Xinjiang. We frequently raise our serious concerns about the situation in Xinjiang with the Chinese authorities and at the UN, and will continue to do so. Through our Overseas Business Guidance we encourage any UK business involved in investing in Xinjiang to consider conducting appropriate due diligence to satisfy themselves that their activities do not support, or risk being seen to be supporting, any human rights violations or abuses.
