Question for Home Office

UIN 1924, tabled on 10 January 2020

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what assessment she has made of the implications for her policies of the High Court’s recent ruling that the £1,000 fee to register a child as UK citizens is unlawful; and whether she has plans to reduce the fee.

While this court case remains active it would not be right to speculate on next steps and potential courses of action. Although the judge ruled that there had not been proper consideration of the Government’s section 55 duties, the fees regulations were not in themselves quashed.

We are, though, committed to considering this issue and the judgment carefully and plan to do so with the diligence that is deserved.
