Mental Health Services: Private Sector

Question for Department of Health and Social Care

UIN HL17842, tabled on 25 September 2019

To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans, if any, they have to conduct an inquiry into standards of care in private mental health units.

We have no such plans at present. Everybody has the right to receive safe, high-quality care. If care has fallen short of this, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) can use its powers to take action against those responsible.

The CQC has a key responsibility in the overall assurance of safety and quality of health and adult social care services in England and has commissioned two independent reviews to look at what it could have done differently or better in terms of its regulation and inspection of Whorlton Hall and other services of this kind.

We are working with the CQC to look at ways in which we can improve the way we hold large independent sector mental health providers with complex structures to account for quality and safety.
