We are deeply concerned by reports that up to 50 people were killed in and around Abuja during protests by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in October 2018. We have raised these concerns with the Nigerian Foreign Minister and the President's Chief of Staff, and welcome commitments by the Government of Nigeria to conduct a thorough investigation and to take appropriate action to hold accountable any member of the security forces held responsible for violations of Nigerian law. It is essential that security forces act in accordance with international law and work to protect civilians.
