Food: UK Trade with EU

Question for Department for Exiting the European Union

UIN HL9815, tabled on 23 July 2018

To ask Her Majesty's Government what is their response to reports that food controls at borders may be suspended in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

We are increasingly confident that we will secure a deal with the EU and that the prospect of leaving negotiations with ‘no deal’ has receded significantly. However, a responsible government should prepare for all potential outcomes, including the unlikely scenario in which no mutually satisfactory agreement can be reached. That is exactly what we are doing.

In the event of a no deal scenario, the Government’s objective is to ensure that movement through ports is as frictionless as possible, whilst maintaining safety and security. This extends to the food, fishery and farming sectors.
