Common Customs Tariffs

Question for Department for International Trade

UIN HL9612, tabled on 17 July 2018

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they have plans for Britain to maintain the EU’s common external tariff permanently; and if so, what assessment they have made of whether this could constrain their ability to strike trade deals with non-EU countries.

The UK will be leaving the Customs Union and Single Market.

In line with the Government’s White Paper ‘The future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union,’ the UK will be free to conduct tariff negotiations with other countries after 29th March 2019, for post Implementation Period tariffs.

We are looking at a full spectrum of options for the future tariff regime and are considering carefully the evidence available before making a final decision that will serve the best interest of British industry and consumers.
