Teachers: Training

To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the time needed for training teachers to deliver effectively the new curriculum due to be introduced in September.

The Department for Education recently conducted a thorough engagement process on the scope and content of relationships education and relationships and sex education, and on the status of personal, social, health and economic education. This involved a wide range of interested stakeholders and a public call for evidence, which generated over 23,000 responses.

We plan to publish the results of the call for evidence shortly alongside a consultation on draft regulations and associated guidance, before laying the regulations in the House for debate. Following approval of the regulations, schools will be able to make use of the statutory guidance to begin delivery of the new subjects.

We are using the evidence gathered from the engagement exercises to determine what resources, training or additional support should be available to teachers in delivering high quality teaching in this area of the curriculum. We will continue to consult on this important issue alongside the draft regulations and guidance.
