Trident Submarines

Question for Ministry of Defence

UIN 105861, tabled on 6 October 2017

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what estimate he has made of the costs of the renewal of the Trident submarine programme (a) with and (b) without (i) construction of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station and (ii) the full projected 18 GWe UK civil nuclear power new build programme; and if he will make a statement.

We estimate the four new Dreadnought submarines will cost £31 billion spread over 35 years. On top of this, we are setting a contingency of £10 billion.

As outlined in the 2017 Nuclear Workforce Assessment, the majority of skills required for UK civil nuclear projects are generic; however, the majority of those required for Defence are more specialised.
