Question for Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

UIN HL4922, tabled on 24 January 2017

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is the basis for the £2.4bn estimated cost of the future plutonium management and disposition solution in the National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline 2016; and how they will define (1) affordability, (2) value for money, and (3) deliverability in respect of that solution.

The overall aim of the UK’s plutonium management and disposition programme is to plan, develop and implement a management solution for separated civil plutonium in the UK until the inventory has been reduced to zero and is put beyond reach.

The Government will it be in a position to proceed once it is confident that its preferred option could be implemented safely and securely, that it is affordable, deliverable, and offers value for money.

Any final decision on a disposition solution will be based upon a business case which complies with the Treasury's Green Book guidance to ensure best practice and value for money.
