To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what plans he has to visit Burma to discuss the (a) promotion of human rights, (b) strengthening of democratic process and (c) protection of ethnic, religious and sexual minorities.

I met State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in London on 13 September together with the Prime Minister, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Maidenhead (Mrs May), where we discussed ways in which the UK could support Burma's political transition including the promotion of human rights and protection of minorities. The Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Mr Boris Johnson) also discussed the transition with her on 12 September during the same visit. In addition, the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my noble Friend, the Rt Hon. Baroness Anelay of St Johns, visited Burma from 9-12 November and met a number of Government Ministers to discuss human rights, democracy and the protection of minorities. I plan to visit to Burma in 2017.
