Under this Government, year on year food prices have fallen, with an annual rate of inflation for food and non-alcoholic drinks of minus 2.5 per cent in the year to January 2015 - the lowest rate since the official CPI series began in 1997.
Our welfare system offers a vital safety net, providing around £94bn in 2014/15 on working age benefits to support people who are, for instance, on low incomes or out of work. We are also taking action to help hardworking families with their food costs, for example through free school meals and the Healthy Start and School Fruit and Vegetable Schemes.
