Question for Prime Minister

UIN 221169, tabled on 19 January 2015

To ask the Prime Minister, with reference to his oral evidence to the Liaison Committee of 16 December 2014, what criteria he used to classify energy sources as (a) highly subsidised and (b) semi-subsidised; and if he will make a statement.

The point that I made during my appearance before the Liaison Committee was that, in the event that despatchable plant such as gas is no longer on the system and if Carbon Capture Storage is not deployed at scale, generation would need to be provided primarily by a combination of nuclear generation and a very large volume of renewable electricity.

The volume of renewable electricity required would necessitate the development of a large number of projects from a range of technologies some of which are significantly more expensive than gas generation.
