Question for Foreign and Commonwealth Office

UIN 207402, tabled on 29 August 2014

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what recent assessment he has made of the situation for Christians in northern Iraq.

Answered on

5 September 2014

We are concerned for the safety of Christians in parts of Iraq controlled by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL have targeted Christians and many other groups in areas under their control. The UK has carried out a number of air drops via the RAF to deliver humanitarian aid.

During my visit to Iraq in late August, I pressed the Prime Minister-designate Haider Al-Abadi to ensure his new government in Iraq would ensure the protection of all minorities, promote human rights and reassert the rule of law.
