Question for Department of Health

UIN 204560, tabled on 8 July 2014

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what assessment he has made of recent research findings published in the Journal of the American Medical Association which indicate that adding tomosynthesis to digital mammography improves the accuracy of breast screening; and whether this new technique will be made available on the NHS.

The NHS Breast Screening Programme has been keeping up to date with developments in tomosynthesis and a review of the evidence is in preparation. The Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer Screening is currently being reconstituted and it is hoped the new committee will meet in the autumn/winter 2014. This item will be on the agenda for the new committee's first meeting.
