Schools: Renewable Energy

Question for Department for Energy and Climate Change

UIN 203947, tabled on 3 July 2014

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, with reference to his Department's solar strategy and initiative with the Department for Education to encourage the deployment of PV on schools, how many schools in England and Wales have installed solar panels to date; when he expects all schools in England and Wales to generate their own power from solar PV or other renewable sources; and if he will make a statement.

The Government does not maintain statistics on the number of schools deploying renewable energy. However, we would hope that schools will increasingly take up the opportunity to install solar PV and other renewables.

One of the priorities set out in the UK Solar PV Strategy which I published earlier this year is to promote the deployment of solar PV on the roofs of Britain's schools. This would reduce the energy costs of schools while providing opportunities to educate the next generation about the role of renewable energy in tackling dangerous climate change.
